Teeth extractions

Extraction of teeth - extraction of wisdom teeth

Surgical extractions refer to the removal of a tooth that requires a more complex procedure than a simple extraction. This can involve making an incision in the gum tissue and sometimes removing a portion of the bone surrounding the tooth to facilitate its extraction.

Surgical extractions may be necessary when a tooth is impacted (partially or fully submerged in the gum or jawbone), severely decayed, fractured, or when it cannot be easily accessed or removed with conventional extraction techniques.

Impacted wisdom teeth removal specifically refers to the extraction of wisdom teeth that have not fully erupted or developed normally in the mouth. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often lack sufficient space in the jaw to grow properly, leading to impaction. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, and other oral health problems. The removal of impacted wisdom teeth typically involves a surgical procedure, which may include making an incision in the gum tissue, removing any bone obstructing the tooth, and sectioning the tooth if necessary.

Both surgical extractions and impacted wisdom teeth removal are performed by oral and maxillofacial surgery, these procedures are typically done under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.

The specific approach and technique used may vary depending on the complexity of the case and the individual needs of the patient. It is important to consult with a dental professional to assess the need for surgical extraction or impacted wisdom teeth removal and to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
